Islamic Ethics

Islam also urges us to deal in full HONESTY. Being honest and truthful, being straightforward is a mighty good quality. Honesty will save you a good deal of would be embarrassing situations, just as telling the truth would.

Being honest and straightforward is a highly prized quality that the people around will appreciate and the Almighty will reward you for.

A person who is honest and truthful, is a person who can be trusted, even in dire situation. Goodness of heart, carrying out the responsibility of the trust of being honest and sincere is something we ought to do our best to reach for.

Honesty in dealing with other and without cheating has been mentioned in the Book of God, the Quran:

وَ اَفوُالکَیلَ اِذا کِلتُم وَ زِنوُا بِالقِسطَاس الُستَقیمِ

“AND CIVE FULL MASURE WHEN YOU MEASURE OUT, AND WEIGH WITH A RIGHT BALANCE.”

(AL-Quran   XVII-34)

وَاَقیموا الوَزنَ بِالقِسطِ وَلا تُخسِروا المیزَانَ

“AND OBESRVE THE BALANCE IN FAIRNESS, AND DON’T BE UNFAIR.”

(AL-Quran lv-9)

So we are commanded by the Almighty to stick to honesty in all its different forms; be it honesty in dealing with others, honesty and fairness in judgment between people pr at all different situation and circumstances.

God urges us too to be just and fair and to be honest and truthful even if it happens at the expense of ourselves or our relationship with relatives and friend. See what he says in the Holy Book:

و َ اِذا قُلتُم فَعدِلوُا وَ لَو کانَ ذاقُربی

“WHENVER YOU SPEAK, SPEAK JUSTLY, EVEN IF A NEAR RELATIVE IS ONCERNED.”

(AL-Quran VI-152)

Your honesty should be binding too. In other words, when you give your word, you are bound to carry it through. By so doing, you attain a high degree of dependability and people can trust you a feel secure in dealing with you. The Almighty will reward you a great deal for that.

See what God’s messenger, Muhammad (P.B.U.H) has said:

1.      “THE TRUTHFUL HONEST MERCHANT IS WUTH THE PROPHETS AND THE TRUTHFUL ONCE AND THE MARTYRS.”

2.      “MUSLIMS SHALL BE BOUND BY THE CONDITIONS WHICH THEY MAKE.”

Thus, we are to be dependable and to be trusted, and he who achieves such status is to be highly commended. Remember, God will watch over our dealings meticulously. If we sell or buy, if we trade something with another, we have to be straight forward, honest, and sincere.

The same is true in every of life, if we happen to make something but try to cheat in such a way as to make more money, God will surely see us, and there will be that day when we will be judged.

A sense of justice and fairness in our hearts, and sense of being straight are a must in every good Muslim. We should follow or even ourselves.

A Good Muslim Will Remember:

1.      To be honest always, whether ho is dealing with others or not.

2.      To be honest is just as good as when telling the truth, it is a straight forward clean gesture.

3.      Being honest sometimes hurts a near relative or even yourself. Even so, it is good to play this great exercise.

Yet, on the contrary:

To cheat or to deal with fraud is obviously very bad, and we ought to do everything in our power to fight the urge for something like that.

Dishonesty, cheating and being fraudulent leads to nothing but a heap of trouble, hurting others, damaging the feeling of trust, and leading to a great deal of insecurity and quite often it can be disastrous. God will punish such acts as He said in His book.

WOE TO THOSE WHO DEAL IN FRAUD. THOSE WHO WHEN THEY HAVE TO RECEIVE BY MEASURE FROM MEN, EXACT FULL MEASURE. BUT WHEN THEY HAVE TO GIVE BY MEASURE TO MEN, THEY GIVE LESS THAN DUE. DO THEY NOT THINK THAT THEY WILL BE CALLED TO ACCOUNT ON A MIGHTY DAY.”

                                (AL- Quran LXXXIII -1-5)

Quite often, he who cheats and be fraudulent is the one who will lose in the long run.  Many a time he will be discovered by the people or the community, and that would be to his detriment or even his doom.

Being fraudulent will damage and undermine others, and we, as good Muslims, must fight such evil. For the sake of a healthy society, fraud and cheating should be fought, and if possible prevented. Islam wants us to build such a good and healthy society, and Islam is severe to a fraudulent cheating person or group of persons, be it rich or poor and whatever his or their position happens to be.
