Islamic Ethics

ABOUT SUSPICION:

Have you ever been suspicious of person? And hasn’t your imagination run wild about him and his intentions? And hasn’t the poor fellow been misjudged and accused by you because of such suspicion?

Most of us have had such feelings which are inherently bad and harmful. If you don’t give the other guy a chance, your suspicions can be quite troublesome and they can lead to very bad conclusions.

That is why:

Islam urges us to play down SUSPICION:

Because suspicion is as bad, if not worse, than envy, and that it may lead to a good deal of destruction, mistrust and sometimes disaster.

See what Almighty God says:

یا اَ یها الذینَ امَنُوا اجتَنِبُوا کثیراً مِنَ الظَنِ اِنَ بَعضَ الظَنِ اِثمٌ

وَلا تَجَسَسوُا وَلا یَغتَب بَعضُکُم بَعضاٌ

اَیُحِبُ اَحَدَکُم اَن یاکُل لَحمَ اَخیه مَیِتَاً فَکَرِهتُمُوهُ

"O YOU WHO BELIEVE! AVOID SUSPICION AS POSSIBLE, FOR SUSPICION IN SOME CASES IS A SIN. SPY NOT EACH OTHER, NOR SPEAKE ILL OF EACH OTHER BEHIND THEIR BACKE. WOULD ANY OF YOU LIKE TO EAT THE FLEFH OF HIS DEAD BROTHER? NAY, HE WOULD ABHOR IT.”

(Al-Quran XILX-12)

So, we are commanded to avoid suspicion because it is so bad; and Nor are we to speak ill behind other people’s backs, be it friend, relative or even enemy, but this idle chat and is a bad habit. This is so, that the holy Quran says it is as bad as eating the flesh of a dead brother; how terrible!

God’s Messenger, Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) also says:

“DON’T BE JEALOUS OF ONE ANOTHER, AND DON’T VIE WITH ONE ANOTHER, AND DON’T HATE ONE ANOTHER, AND DON’T BE AT VARIANCE WITH ONE ANOTHERS, AND DON’T UNDERCUT ONE ANOTHER IN TRADING. AND DO BE BROTHERS IN THE SERVICE OF GOD…………….”

ایاکُم وَ الظنَ فَانَ الظنَ اَکذَبُ الحدیثِ

وَلا تَجَسَسُوا وَلا تَحَسَسُوا

“BEWARE OF SUSPICION, FOR SUSPICION (MAY BE BASED ON) THE MOST UNTHUE INFORMATION; AND DON’T SPY UPON ONE ANOTHER, AND DON’T TRY TO BARE EACH OTHER’S HIDDEN FAILINGS.”

It is far better to think well of people and situation than to be suspicious. If we become suspicious, our imagination may take us too far and quite often we may prove to be wrong.

It is also better to be certain first before we reach certain conclusions. Let us remember that suspicion in certain cases is a sin.

Spying on each other is also very bad it is condemned in the Quran. The same will apply about talking behind each other’s back, gossiping or spreading malice. None of us likes someone to do that to us, and no one wants us to do it to him. It surely is better to have good faith in people and to think well of them than to suspect them, spy on them or gossip about them.

A Good Muslim Will Remember:

1.      Suspicion of people or of certain situations is bad.

2.      He is to avoid the urge to spy or gossip about people which is something bad to do.

3.      To think well of people and to have a clean thought and tongue will encourage others to be the same like you.

4.      Your gossip about people may give the wrong impression and conclusions and may very well hurt the reputation or the feelings of other people. You may produce more damage than you ever intended to.

5.      The damage of gossip can become quite severe and lasting.

Let us remember:

That it is easy to talk behind someone’s back, but it is very bad to do that. It is easy to accuse or to spy on someone, but in the process we may hurt someone who is innocent.

We ought to fight the urge for suspicion, spying and talking behind other, since such habits are nasty and maybe sinful.

Let us remember that Almighty God is the witness and he sees what we do and know what is in our hearts. A person with clean heart will shun away from malice and suspicion and will fight the urge to indulge in such acts. In so doing, the Almighty will reward him well.
