ABOUT RIDICULE AND MOCKERY:
Have you ever been ridiculed and made fun of? If so, hasn’t that made you feel bad inside, feel kind of inferior? In such case, didn’t you have a feeling of retaliating and hurting he who was making fun of you?
Most of us have such an experience, and most of us had hurt feelings as a result, because we were ridiculed intentionally or unintentionally.
So, we are reminded that:
Islam discourages RIDICULE AND MOCKERY:
Since in ridicule, someone’s feeling will inevitable be hurt, and his relationship with others may be damaged. He who ridicules others does it to attract attention to himself, to show off so to speak. The Holy Quran teaches us as follows.
یا اَیها الذینَ امَنُوا لا یَسخَرقَومٌ مِن قَوُمٍ عَسی اَن یَکُونوا خَیراً مِنهُم
“O BELIEVERS! NO PEOPLE SHOULD MOCK OR RIDICULE OTHER PEOPLE, FOR THE RIDICULED ONES MAY BE BETTER THAN THOSE WHO RIDICULE THEM.”
(AL- Quran XLIX- 11)
So, we are commanded to be careful in our dealing with other people, and avoid mockery and ridicule, thus avoiding hurt feelings and potential trouble. It is also unfair of any people to ridicule others, and a good Muslim has fairness and justice in his heart, doesn’t he? Mockery and ridicule can also make us look “mean” in other people eyes.
If we don’t want other people to make fun of us, it would be decent of us not to make fun of anyone.
A Good Muslim Will Remember:
1. Mockery or ridicule of other people is distasteful, silly and is prohibited.
2. Mockery will hurt the people’s feelings and may touch their dignity and self respect.
3. As it will hurt us to see people making fun us, so it will hurt other people, if we make fun of them.
4. Mockery is just as bad as suspicion, spying and gossiping. If we are to have a clean heart and clean tongue, we should avoid the above.
Instead of Mockery and Ridicule:
Instead of that, we can be good friend, who will try to understand each other, and help and support each other, to be friendly and helpful, we will make others reciprocate this feeling, and there will be no hurt feeling or any damage. It is them, than to be silly and ridicule them just for the fun of it.
