Islamic Ethics

ABOUT LEARNING AND EDUCATION:

Islam has urged us consistently and persistently to go in quest of knowledge. To seek knowledge, to learn and to think is a high achievement that every Muslim has to be after. Knowledge will improve our lot, and will give us a good understanding of the nature around us.

Even the very first word that was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was: “Read in the Name of Thy Lord”; thus showing the tremendous emphasis put on the pursuit knowledge.

Islam commands us to seek LEARNING AND EDUCATION:

SEE WHAT THE Holy Quran says:

قُل هَل یَستَوی الذینَ یَعلمونَ وَالذینَ لا یَعلمون

“AND SAY: CAN YOU PUT ON EQUAL POOTING THOSE WHO ARE LEARNED WITH THOSE WHO ARE NOT LEARNED?”

(AL-Quran XXXIX-9)

Those who have accumulated a good deal of knowledge are looked upon with an eye of respect, and they are put on a higher level than those who have neglected the pursuit of education.

God’s messenger, Muhammad (P.B.U.H) says:

“THE SEEEKING OF KNOWLEDGE IS AN OBLIGATION UPON EVERY MUSLIMM BE IT A MAN OR A WOMAN.”

“FHE WHO GOES FORTH IN SEARCH OF KNOWLEDGE IS STRIVING HARD IN THE WAY OF GOD; UNTIL HE RETURNS.”

“THE SUPERIOITY OF THE LEARNED MEN OVER A (MERE) WORSHIPPER IS LIKE MY SUPERIORITY OVER THE BEST OF YOU.”

“WHOMSOEVER GOD WANTS TO DO GOOD, HE GIVES HIM RIGHT UNDERSTSNDING IN RELIGION, AND KNOWHEDGE IS (CONTINUED) THROUGH TEACHING.”

“GO IN QUEST OF KNOWLEDGE EVER INTO CHINA.”

“TAKE HOLD OF KNOWLEDGE YOU COME ACROSS IT.”

“SEEK KNOWLEDGE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.”

“AN HOUR’S CONTEMPLATION IS BETTER THAN A YEAR’S ADORATION.”

“TO SPEND MORE TIME IN LEARNING IS BETTER THAN SPENDING MORE TIME IN PRAYING. IT IS BETTER TO IMPART KNOWLEDGE ONE HOUR IN THE NIGHT THAN TO PRAY THE WHOLE NIGHT.”

“HE WHO KNOWS HIS OWN SELF, KNOW GOD.”

“WHO ARE THE LEARNRD? THEY WHO PRACTICE WHAT THEY KNOW.”

“ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE. IT ENABLES ITS POSSESSOR TO DISTINGUISH RIGHT FROM WRONG; IT HIGHTS THE WAY TO HEAVEN; IT IS OUR FRIEND IN THE DESERT, OUR SOCIETY IN SOLITUDE, OUR COMPASSION WHEN FRIENDLESS; IT GUIDES US TO HAPPINESS; IT SUSTAINS US IN MISERY; IT IS AN ORNAMENT AMONGST FRIENDS, AND AN ARMOUR AGAINST ENEMIES.”

The many sayings above show you how Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) had valued learning, science and knowledge.

Knowledge will open worlds for you, Worlds of thinking, accomplishment, and of new dimensions. Acquiring knowledge will pave the way for a better future in this world, and will make a better man out of you.

When you become knowledgeable, you will able to understand other people better, and you will be able to help them and assist them according to their needs.

As you acquire more knowledge, you learning about God’s creation, the nature around us and what is in it, will become more detailed. You will understand God more to the point, and appreciate Him better.

So we are asked to be in quest of knowledge whenever and where ever it may be, and all through our lives.

There is one particular from of knowledge we should emphasize and concentrate upon. It is the knowledge of the religion of Islam. The more details you learn, the more you will want to learn. Knowledge and application of Islam is our salvation, since it will lead us to the correct path. We will need to learn about it all through our lives, we will try our best to apply it, and best of all, we will try to teach it to others too. This will make a more complete Muslim out of us.

A Good Muslim Will Remember:

1.      He is to seek and acquire knowledge wherever and whenever possible.

2.      He is to continue to learn all through his life.

3.      Learning about the religion of Islam is a high goal of every Muslim.

4.      Through knowledge, he will understand God better, and he will become a better human being.

5.      Through knowledge he can be of greater help to others.

6.      The best thing man cam do is learn about Islam, and put his knowledge into practice, then teach it to others.

7.      The first word of the Quran that was revealed was “read” which has to do with knowledge. See how important learning is in Islam!
