Islamic Ethics

IN REGARD TO RELATIVES

The family is the basic component of the society; if the society is to be healthy, then the families forming such a society will have to be healthy.

The components of the families are you and those in the immediate relation; that is to say, your parents, brothers, sisters and people beyond. In such a structure, we all grow to affect and influence each other, and be affected and influenced by each other.

So, Islam urges us to build family life at a very high moral level. Our obligations to ourselves and our parents, then we will be obliged o our brothers and sisters and gradually and diffusely it extends to others.

See what the Holy Quran says:

وَ اتی المالَ علی حُبهِ ذَوی القربی وَ الیتامی وَالمساکینَ وَ ابنَ السبیلِ

وَالسائلینَ وَفی الرقابِ

“TO GIVE OF YOUR FUNDS OUT OF LOVE FOR HIM, TO YOUR KIN, TO THE ORPHANS, TO THE NEEDY, TO THE WAYFARER, TO THOSE WHO ASK AND FOR THE RANSOM OF SLAVES.

(AL-Quran II-177)

Also see what prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) says:

“A MAN’S FIRST CHARITY SHOULD BE TO HIS OWN FAMILY, IF POOR.”

“THE DUTY OF A YOUNGER TO AN OLDER BROTHER IS AS THAT OF A CHIKD TO HIS FATHER.”

“THE BEST OF YOU, BEFORE GOD AND HIS CREATION, ARE THOSE WHO ARE BEST IN THEIR OWN FAMILIES, AND I AM THE BEST OF MY FAMILY.”

Your brothers and sisters first, and your relatives next, are the closest people to you after your parents. They all command your care, your love, your respect, and understanding.

A younger brother should respect his older brother just about the way he dose his father!

After all, a brother is to help and support his brothers and sisters and vice versa. They are to be a strong united bundle, united in their Islamic ideals, united in their love of God, and united in helping and supporting each other.

Our relatives command just as much love, respect, mutual help as any member in our family. Thus a feeling of closeness will come into existence, that’s very important indeed. Such members will help each other in times of need or otherwise, for the good of each involved.

A Good Muslim Will Remember:

1.      Brothers and sisters come only next to parents in thei99r command of our love and respect and mutual cooperation.

2.      Other relatives come very close to what we are to be with our brothers and sisters.

3.      If such feelings of love and cooperation exist, the whole family will benefit a great deal.
