IN REGARD TO WIDOWS AND ORPHANS
Of all people who need our understanding, sympathy and help, the widows and the orphans need them most. Widows who have little or no support can suffer a lot and be at quite a disadvantage. If she has children who have become orphaned, the problem may become more acute and their situation can be very precarious.
See what the Almighty says in His Holy Book, the Quran:
وَ اتوُ الیَنامی اَموالَهم وَلا تَتَبَدَّلوُا الخَبیثَ بالطَیبِ وَلا
تاکُلُوااموالَهُم الی اَموالِهِم اِنَهُ کانَ حوباً کبیراً
“AND TO THE ORPHANS DO RESTORE THEIR PROPERTY (WHEN THEY REACH THEIR AGE), AND DON’T SUBSTITUTE YOUR BAD THINGS FOR THEIR GOOD ONES; AND DEVOUR NOT THEIR FUNDS (BY MIXING IT UP) WITH YOUR OWN; FOR OF A CERTAINTY THIS IS INDEED A GREAT SIN.”
“THEREFORE, TREAT NOT THE ORPHAN WITH OPRESSION, NOR BE HARSH TO THE SEEKER OF INFORMATION, BUT SPEAK PUBLICALLY OF THE BOUNTY OF YOUR LORD.”
(AL-Quran XCIII 9-11)
“HAVE YOU SEEN THE ONE WHO DENIES RELIGION. IT IS HE WHO WOULD REJECT THE ORPHAN, AND IT IS HE WHO DOES NOT URGE FOR FEEDING THE INDIGENT.”
(AL-Quran CVII 1-3)
As we see, the Almighty urges us to do everything in our power to help the orphans and widows, if that means material help, or help with their worldly affairs. We will be rewarded handsomely for that by the Almighty who oversees us and knows all about what is in our hearts.
God’s Messenger, Muhammad (P.B.U.H) says:
“HE EHO STRIVES FOR THE WIDOWS AND THE POOR IS LIKE ONE WHO STRIVES IN THE WAY OF GOD.”
He also said:
“A GIVRE OF MAINTENANCE TO THE WIDOES AND THE POOR IS LIKE A BESTOWER IN THE WAY OF GOD, AN UTTERER OF PRAYERS ALL NIGHT, AND A KEEPER OF CONSTANT FAST.”
A widow is like someone who is needy, whom we should be honored to help and to support. It is important for us to strive very hard to give a helping hand to the helpless widow or the need.
Orphans will stand to be at an even greater disadvantage. They not only need support, but they need guidance and care. Both the holy Quran and the prophet urge us to pay special attention to such situations.
The Messenger of god has said:
اَنا وَ کافِلُ الیتیمِ فی الجَنةِ هکذا
وَاشارَ باِصبعَیهِ السبابَةِ والوُسعی
“I, AND THE PERSON WHO BRINGS UP AN ORPHAN WLL BE LIKE THIS IN HEAVENS; AND HE POINTED OUT HIS INDEX AND MIDDLE FINGER TOGETHER.”
He also said:
“THE BEST MUSLIM HOUSE IS THAT WHICH AN ORPHAN IS BENEFITTED; AND THE WORSET MUSLIM HOUSE IS THAT IN WHICH AN ORPHAN IS ILL-TREATED.”
The children who lose a parent (the orphans) can certainly be at a great disadvantage; they will feel deprived and so different from being by themselves, almost helpless.
We are to be particularly sensitive to their needs and to their support, and to give the help and assistance whenever possible.
The orphans my need care until they grow to become independent. During those many years, they need advice, direction and care like other children. Their possession may need just as much supervision.
It is so obvious then, that the orphans and the widows are to have extra care, protection, advice and supervision, all for the sake of the Almighty and for the sake of humanity.
It is this good effort we put forth, that the prophet describes as a struggle in the way of God, which is the very noble end, in itself.
A Good Muslim Will Remember:
1. Widows, orphans, and the needy may need our help or we should be glad to offer it as a duty and as a volunteer.
2. We are to support them emotionally.
3. We are to support them financially.
4. We are to assist with everyday chores if our
5. We are to give our help, yet let them keep their dignity and self respect.
6. An orphan is at a great disadvantage.
7. More then anyone else an orphan needs our understanding, assistance, and protection.
8. We are to be available to the orphan until they are grown to be independent.
9. An orphan and his possession are like a great trust in our hands, a trust to be taken very seriously.
