IN REGARD TO LIQUOR

Islam prohibits the drinking of liquor and orders us to be com plete teetotalers. Liquor is an evil thing that can lead to a person’s own destruction. Liquor can make him lose his self contro and lose his dignity, it can damage his health, and it can make him dangerous if he drives while intoxicated.

Liquor can be expensive and it can cut down a great deal in the family’s finances. Many people become liquor dependent, what is calle Alcoholic, and this in itself can play havoc in the family life. The children will suffer, the job will suffer and indirectly the whole society will suffer. An alcoholic is more liable to lie and steal, and he is more likely to have a poor image of himself.

Alcohol is offered socially, and he who takes a small drink is liable to take a larger drink, and he who takes a few drinks is liable to take way too many.

See what Almighty God, who wants our welfare, says in the Quran:

یا ایها الذینَ امنوا لا تَقرَبواالصلوةَ وَ اَنتُم سَکاری حَتی تَعلَموا ما تَقولونَ

“O YOU WHO BELIEVE! DON’T APPROACH PRAYERS WITH A BEEFOGGED MINT UNTIL YOU CAN UNDERSTAND ALL THAT YOU SAY:

یَسئلونَکَ عَن الخمرُ وَالمیسِر قُل فیهِما اِثمٌ کبیرٌ

وَمنافِعُ للناسِ وَ اِثمُهُما اَکبرُ مِن نفعِهِما

“THEY ASK YOU CONCERNING INTOXICANTS AND GAMBLING. SAY: ‘IN THEN IS A GREAT SIN, AND SOME ADVANTAGES FOR MANKIND; BUT THE SIN IS GREATER THAN THE PROFIT.”

 (AL- QURAN II-219)

“O YOU WHO BELIEVE! INTOXICANTS AND GAMBLING, DEDICATION OF STONES AND DIVINATION BY ARROWS ARE WORKS OF THE EVIL ONE. AVOID SUCH, THAT YOU MAY PROSPER.”

(AL-QURAN V-93)

So, we are explicitly prohibited from drinking liquor in all its forms, be it beer, wine or others. We are to be sober, to have self control, to be dignified and to be good. With liquor, especially if taken in goodly amount, a person loses of his good judgement and he stands to lose in the long run.

See what God’s messenger Muhammad (P.B.U.H) says:

“DON”T DRINK LIQUOR, FOR IT IS THE ROOT OF EVIL.”

“OF WHATEVER THING A LARGE QUANTITY INTOXICATES, EVEN A SMALL QUANTITY IS PROHIBITED.”

“EVERY DRINK THAT INTOXICATES IS PROHIBITED.”

The sense of dignity and serenity, the sense of poise and self respect can easily be lost with excessive drinks of alcohol.

Such a person can become a nuisance to nuisance to others, he can be abusive, he can hurt others easily, and he may become the source of all kinds of trouble.

God the Almighty, wants our welfare. He wants us to be good, not to hurt ourselves or hurt others. So, He prohibited alcohol, even a small amount of it.

In parties, in invitations to our house or to others, we can always order a soft drink, such as gingerale or coke, than to order what God does not want us want us to drink.

A Good Muslim Will Remember:

1.      Alcohol is prohibited in Islam.

2.      Alcohol is damaging to our health.

3.      Alcohol can hurt our finances.

4.      A person can become dependent on alcohol.

5.      One of the biggest reasons of accidents on the roads is people who drive their cars while they are drunk.

6.      An alcohol dependent person, can become a source of trouble in his work, in his family, and in his society.

7.      In a society where social drinking is acceptable, and where advertisement for alcohol is very strong, we should be particularly strong in resisting the temptation, and avoid this evil.

We can always drink coke, gingerale, and the like, and apply the Golden rule of God: Taking alcohol is Haram.
